Perpetual Entertainment, One to Beam Up

Star Trek Online (working title) was announced on September 7, 2004. Since then, there hasn’t been much news about this title. All we know is that it is an MMO that takes place inside the Star Trek universe.

In March of 2005, Gamespot.com managed to get a sneak preview on Star Trek Online from lead designer Glen Dahlgren.

The gaming community has received small hints that development was still moving in the form of concept art and basic screenshots.

Then in December of 2006, we received word that Perpetual was handing out layoffs, but the company said that they were still comitted to Star Trek Online.

Currently, Star Trek Online has an official website with not much information.

This game (like most Star Trek games) will either be a great success or it will fail miserably. There are some worried Star Trek fans who are attempting to rally together to make sure that Perpetual doesn’t ruin their chances at playing a great Star Trek game.

The following is a YouTube.com posted by this group of Star Trek fans on February 4, 2007:

The following is the message from Tony Tuthill, the video’s poster:

For the all the WORLD-WIDE Star Trek:Online fans who followed the forums and who participated in the GREAT BRAINSTORM for the past two (or more) years…giving your input to Viacom,Paramount Pictures,Perpetual Entertainment,CBS,NASA,DARPA,U.S. DoD,The U.S. DoE,IBM,SONY,TOSHIBA,Intel,AMD,Microsoft ,Apple, etc. etc…..on how Star Trek:Online should be made!

This MMO has the potential to allow ‘YOU’ directly into a fully realized, fully functioning Star Trek universe where you can have an online character and career in Starfleet in any of the major fields (or cross-train!).

It has the potential to involve YOU directly in the storyline of the new animated series, the new film or the new television show amd can allow the Star Trek fan the ability to help shape canon and become a moment of Star Trek history.

THIS MMO is where it starts. Star Trek needs you right now to get into those forums and back these ideas.
You can imagine the resistance CBS/PA/PE have put up with regards to wanting to involve NASA and other organizations that could all bring so much to Star Trek:Online.

CBS/ and Perpetual Entertainment of course want what World of Wracraft has to themselves. A MMO that is created for under $100 million that will make back $125 million ‘in the first day’ and be making 79 million dollars a month by the end of the second year…perpetually.

The MMO has the ability to make more money than the franchise has ever seen in the entire history of Star Trek…by itself.

The trend in Star Trek gaming and online experiences has been to deliver more and more dumbed down Star Trek content.

Support a Star Trek:Online experience as historic as Star Trek itself and an experience worth $125 million in the first day and $79 million a month…FOREVER!

STOP BY your favorite Star Trek: Online forum today!!: ST:O is nowhere near done yet and support for major ideas is still on the table!

Get into those Star Trek Online forums, vote and voice your opinions now ‘while it matters’!

Thank you to all who inspired these images that came from the community inspired Star Trek:Online cartoon, ST:Oned (found on www.startrek-online.net).

Each episode of the ST:Oned cartoons usually pulled from something directly posted in one of the Star Trek:online forums. Mostly from Startrek-online.net which has come to be a MAJOR HUB for those interested in Star Trek:Online.

The developers do hang out there (as well as other celebs who have been known to stop by like: DOC STERNBACH. :) ).

There was a comment made on the video a few days ago by “simeetg,” who believes that Star Trek Online will just be a World of Warcraft clone:

I support your passion and wish it were true, But Star Trek Online will be little more than a flashier Wow clone in space with a Star Trek skin. I am sure the production (graphics, sound) will be good though.
I say this because they cut out ship interiors and are not making role play a focus of the game. Sorry.

Hopefully developers will take a lesson from history and start involving the gamers and fans in the development process. The more these companies listen to the gaming community, the better their chances are of creating a truly great game.
