I don’t (and won’t) venture outside of the realm of video games, but this event calls for such action. Table-top, role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons are where modern RPG video games originated. And, despite the growing popularity of video games, these sit-down, simulated RPGs still thrive.
The troops are holding a “Game Day” event at Camp Adder/Tallil Airbase. They are calling the event, “Ziggurat Con.” According to SPC David Amberson’s blog post, the event will feature the following RPG games: Babylon 5 RPG, Cyberpunk 2020, D&D, D&D RPGA, GURPS, Historic Miniatures Battles, Magic Tournament, MechWarrior Miniatures, Rifts, Shadowrun, Starship Troopers, White Wolf System-Vampire, White Wolf System-Werewolf, and XCrawl.
Unfortunately, the gaming supplies are, well, in short supply. Despite the Army’s Morale Welfare & Recreation Department, which allocated a part of the Community Activity Center to hold the event, Amberson says that “dice are in short supply, with many soldiers breaking the unwritten taboo held by many gamers and sharing dice.”
According to Midnight, a marine who runs the blog, “The Midnight Hour,” a similar event was held last year in Camp Fallujah. The event featured Halo and Midnight was the winner.
Video games aren’t just for domestic entertainment! Is it possible that a form of entertainment that is despised by most authorities and held responsible for such violent acts as the recent Virginia Tech shooting could possibly also be slightly responsible for the maintaining of good morale among our troops?
Video games are here whether you like it or not and, in this gamer’s humble opinion, they are here for the better.
