I reviewed the PC version of Warriors Orochi, a hack-and-slash action game that combines the style and characters of Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. Overall, here is what you need to know, there is some good, and a lot of bad.
The Good
-
Lots of characters
-
Tag-team gameplay of up to 3 characters
-
Entertaining hack-and-slash gameplay
The Bad
-
It has poor voice acting
-
Terrible techno music
-
No mouse support! (I know, WTF?)
-
Visuals that were impressive when the PS2 launched
-
Buggy AI that requires you to babysit your allies

I played an earlier game from the series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynasty_Warriors_%28PSP%29) on the PSP which was released a few years back. It was good for about 30mins to 2hours of fun, but the stories surrounding the individual characters felt lacklustre and there was almost no incentive to progress onto each next level as the same map was used with nearly the same goals. The range of moves was poor meaning the game deteriorated fairly quickly into a button masher which is never good. There are some fantastic examples of hack and slash games done right -Return of the King (Xbox) comes to mind as well as many others, this is not one of them.
Still I can’t say I have played this new game but based on my experience with the earlier title your summary does not surprise me sadly. Games like these tend to have a cult following of people who will buy the games regardless of technical merit, unfortunately, in order to secure mass market appeal, they have to do a little more than regurgitate a poor game with added characters, tag team mode and extra narrative.
